The smallest spaces in the home, such as hallways and bathrooms are usually those people tend to play it most safe, in order to avoid the risk of ‘making it look smaller’.
However, more often than not, these areas offer the most potential for creative expression, and when designed well, they can be the most memorable parts of your home.
Small spaces allow you to experiment design-wise and function-wise and flooring can play a big part in making your small space beautiful. Here are some tips for designing your small space and selecting the perfect flooring to elevate it.
People often turn to light or neutral shades to make a small space appear larger, but darker hues can also create the illusion of more space by blurring the boundaries of the walls.
When used correctly, bold colours can enhance rather than overwhelm a room. If you’re hesitant to fully commit to a bold colour, consider creating a contrast with light and dark elements.
And don’t forget about your 6th wall – your floor. Another great way to incorporate colour into your scheme such as through Victorian or modern tiles, depending on your aesthetic.
As with colour, many people avoid using patterns or textures in smaller spaces to prevent them from appearing even smaller. However this is another opportunity to make an impact.
Embrace textures and patterns on your walls and floors with striking wallpaper, panelling, or bold flooring choices like patterned tiles, herringbone, panel, or chevron wood designs and create contrast with layers and design pairings.
Direct the eye with a considered focal point, and structure the rest of your scheme for balance. This focal point could be your flooring, a striking light fixture, or a large-scale piece of artwork.
In small spaces, resist the urge to scale down furniture and accessories too much, as this can lead to a cluttered feel. Opt instead for larger furniture and design elements to impart a sense of spaciousness and luxury to the room.
Small spaces are less forgiving when it comes to clutter. Make use of vertical space with floating shelves and cupboards to increase storage capacity and improve organisation, without taking up valuable floor space.
Also, opt for floating furniture where possible to achieve a seamless look, create the illusion of additional space, simplify cleaning, and showcase your floor design without interruption.
